This sterling silver spoon ring was crafted from Towle Silversmiths’ King Richard pattern — a 1932 design by Ferdinand Poppenhäuser that looks every bit as dignified as it sounds. Crisp lines, elegant curves, and that unmistakable “I’ve‑been‑around‑a‑while‑and‑I‑know‑who‑I‑am” energy. And yes, this beauty is solid sterling, not plated.

This particular spoon lived a whole life before it ever made it to my bench. It belonged to Martha Ann “Aunty Ann” Bigger Heald, a lifelong Iowan with a heart big enough to fill a schoolhouse. Born in 1929, she grew up in Lisbon, graduated from Lisbon High and Emporia College, and then spent her career shaping young minds at Erskine Elementary in Cedar Rapids. No kids of her own — unless you count the hundreds she taught and the fur babies she adored.

Aunty Ann was the kind of woman who showed up early, stayed late, remembered birthdays, and always had a soft spot for anything with four legs and a tail. She played bridge like it was a competitive sport, never missed a bingo night, and was deeply woven into her community — Lisbon United Methodist Church, ISEA, NEA, Eastern Star, American Legion Auxiliary… she kept busy.

This spoon was part of her everyday life — polished, used, loved, and tucked into the rhythm of a woman who gave more than she ever asked for.

Now it’s been reshaped into something new: a ring with history, heart, and just a little bit of attitude. A piece that carries her story forward — ready to be worn, cherished, and lived in all over again.
